Features
Typically found along the sandy and muddy seafloors of the Atlantic Galician and Portuguese coasts, usually at depths of 10 to 70 meters.
Curiosities
Turbot are diamond-shaped flatfish reaching up to 1 meter. While many have both eyes on one side, some retain an eye on each side, an unusual trait for flatfish.
They use their speckled skin and bony bumps, called “tubercles,”
to blend into sandy and muddy seafloors, ambushing small fish and crustaceans. Known for their resilience, they can live over 20 years and adapt to changes in water temperature and salinity.
