Inspiring Women - Ayaka Fukano: A Journey of Art, Love, and Self-Expression
To kick off 2025, we’re excited to introduce Ayaka Fukano, an artist whose vibrant illustrations bring joy and energy. In this interview, Ayaka shares her journey from diverse careers to becoming a full-time artist, and the inspiration behind her colorful work. Let’s dive into her creative world!
Hi sailors, my name is AYAKA FUKANO, and I’m an artist based in Tokyo, Japan. I’ve had various jobs in my life: hotel employee, restaurant worker, university clerk, and accountant for a design firm. One day, after becoming a single mother to a 4 year old son and rebuilding my life, I wondered what my son would learn from me as I rushed through daily tasks. I wanted to show him how to pursue what he truly desires. That’s when I stumbled upon art.
I became friends with a neighborhood restaurant owner, who one day asked if I’d like to create a sign. I wasn’t painting at the time, but the idea of the “challenge” struck me. I decided to give it a try, and I immediately fell in love with painting. This led to private exhibitions and new opportunities that have brought me to where I am today.
Your work is filled with colorful characters and positive energy. What inspires you to create such joyful and uplifting illustrations?
I’ve always enjoyed interacting with people, so it’s natural that many of my works feature people. I’m also good at recalling joyful memories and the beautiful, loving moments that fill everyday life. If someone feels the energy of joy and happiness in my art, it’s because it’s inspired by these meaningful moments I’ve experienced in the past.
You work mainly with pens, acrylics, and paper. What draws you to these traditional materials, and how do they enhance your creative expression?
I still use the same type of pens I started with when I began painting. Since I didn’t study art formally, everything is new to me, and I’m constantly exploring what works best for me. One thing I know for sure is that I love vivid, distinct colors, so I’m drawn to materials that allow me to express that.
The Imperial Palace in Tokyo is a key source of inspiration for you. What is it about this place that fuels your creativity, and how does it influence your art?
During challenging times in my life, I would often take walks around the Imperial Palace with my father, and he taught me many valuable lessons. The Imperial Palace has always held a special place in my heart because it’s a place full of memories and surrounded by nature, which is a rare sight in a city center dominated by concrete.
Your art beautifully reflects themes of love and human connection. How do you approach these themes, and what do they mean to you personally?
My journey has been shaped by many life experiences, including different jobs, marriage, childbirth, and divorce. During one of these times, my grandfather, whom I loved deeply, developed dementia. As he moved between the present and the past, I realized the importance of sharing my love with him now.
This theme of love has become central to my work. Having received so much love from others, I want to give that love back through my art, believing that when we share love, it makes the world a kinder place.
What emotions or messages do you hope people feel when they view your art?
The message I hope to convey through my art is the importance of loving yourself and knowing that there are always allies around you, including me. At the core of it all, it's all about love.
Do you have any advice for emerging artists who want to follow their passion and tell stories through their artwork?
My advice to emerging artists is to try whatever you feel drawn to, regardless of age. What seems like failure now may lead to success later, and you’ll learn a lot along the way. Life is precious, so embrace it and make the most of your time!
