Inspiring Women — Valentine Raeman, Behind the Camera: Unveiling her Vision.
Can you tell us about your photographic career and how you discovered your passion for photography?
I started photographing as a way to capture the little things of my children growing up and I never stopped. I learned the techniques by photographing a lot.
I also like to experiment with analog photography because it gives me a lot of satisfaction. In art school I learned the techniques to develop my analog photos and print them in the darkroom. It is so relaxing to be disconnected from the outside world for a few hours, without distractions of cell phone or other worries.
We love your photographic style, but we are always curious about the creative process of each artist, how would you describe yours?
I've always been a visual thinker. For me, inspiration is everywhere. Buildings, color combinations, clothing, another image, the light.... I've always had a weakness for music and everything vintage. I love to play with all this and capture everyday magic with a nostalgic touch.
The artistic world is very appealing, but sometimes it is difficult to make a niche, what advice would you give to someone who is trying to make a niche in the world of photography?
Just shoot and have fun. Try to capture in images what you see and what you feel. Don't think too much and don't rush because you've to get good results right away.
With all these years of experience, do you have a particular project or photo that you remember that holds a special place in your heart and, if so, could you share the story behind it?
Since I don't work full time as a photographer, I always try to focus on the projects I accept. I'm not going to easily say "yes" to a commission that I myself don't feel comfortable with. That's why all of my assignments or projects have earned a place in my heart.
If I have to choose one image, it's the one I took on vacation in northern Spain a few years ago. We were traveling around then in our VW van and we passed a village with a natural swimming pool among the rocks. Because of the corona pandemic, swimming was not allowed and the pool was empty. Lola went down to explore and I took this picture of her.
As the interview is coming to an end, we know that collaboration is often a key aspect of the creative process, would you reveal if there is a particular artist or professional you dream of collaborating with in the future?
I like to let projects come to me and evolve. I like to learn, so I like to work with artists I can learn something from. Right now I'm intrigued by collages and from there I would love to make time to collaborate with another artist on such a project.
Valentine, thank you for giving us a glimpse into your world. Your passion and creativity are truly inspiring, and it's been a pleasure learning from you. I'm excited to see where your journey takes you next. Keep shining behind the lens!
