Inspiring women — Koral Antolín and her imagination factory
Some years ago, browsing the Internet to get some inspiration, we discovered Koral's blog and had a 'wow' moment that made us want to know more about that creative girl.
Fast forward to today and we are lucky to consider Koral one of our most creative friends: she can transform an old bathroom into a Pinterest-worthy place with her own hands or create a Summer dress from a man's shirt like it's the easiest thing ever.
Of course, we invited her to our 'Inspiring Women' posts so you sailors can meet her and get inspired by her creativity.
Here she is!
Ahoy Koral, welcome to our journal! We are so happy to have you on board. Could you please introduce yourself? Where are you from? What do you do?
Hello Don Fisher team! My name is Koral Antolín, a Madrid-based creative soul with a passion for art, design and decor. I have a DIY & fashion customization blog called Fábrica de Imaginación (which translates into “Imagination factory”) where I explore the many disciplines I learned while studying Fine Arts and where I can create pretty things with my own hands, from paper flowers to cotton woven lampshades.
Your DIY projects are super beautiful and creative, we firmly believe you are the Spanish queen of DIY. Where do you find the inspiration? What’s the part you enjoy the most while doing them?
Awww, thanks so much! Queen might be too big of a title, but I am definitely a DIY enthusiast and what I enjoy the most is the creative process behind a project, i.e. the messy part! I love coming up with ideas, drawing sketches, mixing materials, starting over and finding solutions to a design problem. My head is always working to the point that it’s difficult to switch off, hahaha.
I find inspiration in all sorts of places, but I keep an attentive eye when on social media and I also try to travel and visit design exhibitions as often as I can.
In fact, your DIY projects were so amazing that some of your fans suggested you to sell them as products. And no sooner said than done, a year ago Studio fi was born! What can you tell us about this exciting project of yours?
Indeed, I still cannot believe it myself! In 2018 I published a tutorial on the blog to embroider one of Picasso’s illustrations on a sweater and it got an amazing response. I then started to think that creating these pieces for others could be a nice way of thanking my readers for all their support throughout the years, and also to acknowledge the fact that not everyone has the time or the patience to carry out all those DIY projects saved on their Pinterest boards!
At the end of 2018, after joining forces with my mum and my sister, we officially launched Studio fi, a minimal design brand of hand-embroidered pieces that intend to bring a little bit of art to your home. I have always loved drawing and sketching, so it was only natural that we chose this means of expression for our first collection, which is inspired by the great Matisse, although we have already started working on our very own designs!
Also, you recently became a mom, congratulations! We often hear you gain some kind of superpowers becoming a mum. How did it affect you creatively?
Thank you! We are head over heels for our little boy, and you would think the lack of sleep would impact your creative juices… However in my case, instead of switching off and disconnecting while on maternity leave as I planned, those creative ideas kept on coming and crowding my head, even in the middle of the night!
I’ve always had more ideas than time to execute them, so now it’s really no different but with a fabulous sidekick by my side.
When we launched the embroidered stickers we immediately contacted you to do something together and the result was beyond our expectations: 3 amazing animated stories! That made us realize our love was mutual. What do you like the most about Don Fisher?
Oh, I adore your brand! The simplicity of an idea so well executed, you ladies managed to create an entire universe where you can keep on introducing amazing products that everybody likes. I also love how colourful your bonitos are, can I have one of each, please?
You sure can! We would love you to swim in a sea of Bonitos :) Thanks for being with us today.
