Inspiring women — Pui Lee of Scout Editions
We literally had a crush on Pui's work. We were taking a small break during our stay in the London's fair we attended back in September and we suddenly spotted the cutest stand, named Scout Editions.
We obviously stopped and started observing the tiniest and prettiest cards displayed and had the chance to meet Pui.
Her work is so inspiring that we wanted to bring her to our journal and...
Here she is!
Ahoy Pui! Welcome to our journal, it’s a pleasure having you here. Could you tell us a bit about yourself? Where do you live? What’s your story?
Hello! Thank you. My name is Pui and I’m a designer and illustrator based in London.
I trained as a graphic designer and have been working in the industry designing all sorts from branding, campaign, art direction, packaging design and product design. Gradually I was doing more illustration work and soon developed my own style.
We discovered your amazing project, Scout Editions, when we met at the Top Drawer tradeshow and we fell immediately in love with it. Could you tell us a bit about it?
Scout Editions started out as a solo project. It was a project I did in any free time I had, as I was working as a graphic designer too. The prints I created for Scout Editions did really well at fairs and through meeting many interesting like-minded creatives at fairs and events, I decided to spend some time developing my first collection, eventually it led onto doing our first trade show in London a few years ago.
My brother Wai is now on board, as it got real busy, he helps with the orders and production. Progress has been very organic and we hope to develop more products and collaborations in the future.
Your style feels like vintage meets Japan. What are your biggest influences? And your inspirations?
Thank you, that’s funny as I am hugely inspired by vintage and Japan. I’m a collector of all sorts, from vintage print ephemera, packaging and picture books.
I also love vintage textiles as I think they make great reference for colours and print.
My inspiration comes from everywhere, from libraries, travel, nature and the everyday.
I love exploring colours, textures and patterns and I enjoy playing with scale from very small things to extra large scale.
I love simplicity, space and try to include a dose of fun. I try to create happy lighthearted work, to bring a bit of joy into the everyday.
My inspirations are Paul Rand, Saul Bass, Charley Harper, Len Lye Andy Warhol and many more!
What’s the best part of running your own business? And the worst?
The best part is that there are no rules and I get to explore whatever I like - every day is so different.
Scout Editions is a work in progress, as I grow Scout Editions grows with me too.
The worst part is having to deal with the accounts, as numbers I find tricky!
We are so glad you also like Don Fisher! What do you like the most about it?
I adore your brand! I love that you have created a world of your own and at the same time introducing us to each creature that we can learn more about. It's so fun and appeals to any age too :-)
And we adore your project too! Thanks for being here with us today.
